The Thomists specialize in Swing, the music that was initially called Jazz in the early 1920's. In the 1930's it transformed into Swing, which was simply 'Jazz' with a new name. In the 1940's and 1950's it was dubbed Pop.
We play music from the Big Band era, as well as those classic popular standards from the 20th century that are considered part of The Great American Songbook, all of which are rooted in the pure pleasure of Swing. This fantastic music has been reborn time and again as many artists continuously rediscover, record and perform these well known standards.
The band is very versatile and has built a repertoire of over 1000 tunes over the past 50 years. The orchestra faithfully reproduces classic Big Band tunes as played by legends like Glenn Miller, Count Basie, Tommy Dorsey, Artie Shaw, Benny Goodman, Duke Ellington and many other legends from that era.
Our diverse repertoire includes signature tunes popularized by artists like Bobby Darrin, Frank Sinatra, Ella Fitzgerald, Tony Bennett, Dean Martin, Peggy Lee, Billie Holiday, Louis Armstrong and many, many other greats. We also play 50s R&R, Latin and Old Fashioned or Viennese waltzes. We cover Country with tunes popularized by Johnny Cash, Hank Williams, Willie Nelson and Patsy Cline. We can also spice things up with a few modern classics from the 70s and 80s.
