The Thomists specialize in Swing, the music that was initially called Jazz in the early 1920's. In the 1930's it transformed into Swing, which was simply 'Jazz' with a new name. Later, in the 1940's and 1950's it was dubbed Pop.
We play music from the Big Band era, as well as those classic popular standards from the 20th century that are considered part of The Great American Songbook, all of which are rooted in the pure pleasure of Swing. This fantastic music has been reborn time and again as many artists continuously rediscover, record and perform these well known standards.
The band is very versatile and has built a repertoire of over 1000 tunes over the past 50 years. Composed of a core of seasoned musicians, the orchestra is able to faithfully reproduce classic Big Band tunes as played by legends like Glenn Miller, Count Basie, Tommy Dorsey, Artie Shaw, Benny Goodman, Duke Ellington and many other legends from that era.
Our diverse repertoire will offer something for everyone. Aside from signature tunes popularized by greats such as Bobby Darrin, Frank Sinatra, Ella Fitzgerald, Tony Bennett, Dean Martin, Peggy Lee, Billie Holiday and Louis Armstrong, we also mix things up with some 50s Rock and Roll hits, a little Latin and the occasional old fashioned Waltz. Folks with a country taste will like tunes popularized by Johnny Cash, Hank Williams, Willie Nelson and Patsy Cline. We don't ignore the 70s and 80s and we do play some more modern hits.
The music we play has stood the test of time and continues to appeal to new audiences as segments of each new generation experience the music and feel an affinity for it. Even if you are the most casual music fan you will hear the orchestra play tunes you know and tunes you didn't know you knew !
